Japamala (Japa = repetition, Mala = cord or necklace) is an ancient object of spiritual devotion, also known as a rosary of prayers in the West. It is widely used to help in prayer. We then have two currents: one spiritual, "Japa," and another material, "Mala" meditation. Thus, the spiritual energies invoked "Japa" energize the "Mala". According to Yogi philosophy, by completing the circuit of 108 repetitions of prayer, mentalization, or mantra, one reaches a higher stage in the consciousness called the transcendental (the stage that transcends the fixations of the mind, keeping consciousness focused on itself).
